Grey Squirrel Control

Ecopest professional pest control service will help you with your grey squirrel problem, and you can rest assured that it will be done in the most humane and eco-friendly way possible. We don’t use any poisons, and we don’t use live capture traps, as this causes undue stress and suffering to the animal. As the grey squirrel is an invasive species, under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is an offence to release a live-caught grey squirrel back into the wild. For this reason, we use the latest trapping techniques that cause the least suffering possible. This includes the new Trapinator from New Zealand that is being used to help them conserve ground-nesting birds by culling invasive ground predators. These traps are secured within a strong plastic box that excludes non-target species, and we will check this regularly and once successful we will remove the animal quickly and discreetly.

If you are having grey squirrel problems on your farm or estate, we can also tailor our control program using slightly different trapping techniques. We are also very proficient with air rifles which are a valuable tool for squirrel control. In a rural location we can do a combination of tunnel traps on fenceposts and attached to trees, together with professional shooting from trained marksmen if required.

Why We Need To Control Grey Squirrels

The grey squirrels have become a familiar sight in the British countryside and many people see them as very cute. While this may be true and at Ecopest we agree that every 'pest' species is just an animal trying to survive, unfortunately they are in the wrong place, and  squirrels can and do cause a lot of problems for people and wildlife.

Grey squirrels cause serious damage to trees and property, and you have probably visited our Ecopest website because you have a problem with squirrels living on your land or in your loft space, doing damage such as:

Stripping tree bark on trees in the garden or grounds.
    Gnawing on woodwork and ceilings.
    Stripping insulation from electrical wires.
    Tearing up fiberglass insulation.
Contaminate cold water tanks and attic space with urine and droppings.
Customers also report sleep issues due to the loud noises they make at night while they’re scuttling around your attic.

Spotting lots of other squirrels around your property, particularly near your roof or on high fences.
Fruit and nuts being stolen from bird feeders, or the feeders being disturbed/knocked over.
Bark being stripped from trees in your garden.

Grey Squirrel Facts and Identification

Grey squirrels(Sciurus carolinensis) are rodents, 25cm long and a tail 22cm long. Their winter coat is grey with a white underside and their summer coat is brownish grey. They are not to be confused with our native red squirrel (Sciurus Vulgaris), which has a red/brown coat in summer but may show some grey in winter. Red squirrels are smaller with red tufts and have been pushed out of most of southern England by the grey squirrels. Red squirrels are a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

Brought to Britain in the 1870’s as ornamental additions to high-class estates and country homes, they soon escaped into the wild and established themselves quickly. They outcompete our native red squirrel, take songbird eggs and chicks, strip bark on trees and saplings, causing them to die. They are now recognized as being in the top 100 worst invasive pest species in the world by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
